As I explained in last week’s column, I cringe every time I hear someone ask “Is Ontario ready for a gay premier?” It’s probably true that an unspecified number of Ontarians might be bigoted enough not to vote for a candidate because she’s a lesbian. But the possibility that bigotry exists is not a reason to pander to it. At some point, as a society, we have to stop asking whether people are ready to stop being bigots and just accept, as Tabatha Southey wrote in her recent column, that “pleas for ‘tolerance’ or ‘compassion’ toward LGBT people feel anachronistic. They simply are. They are simply owed.”
This morning, one of my favourite radio shows — CBC’s The Current — invited me on to talk about this, with David Rayside and Scott Brison. You can listen to that discussion here.
